Many people who read of the internet, want to make a killing on the internet and retire at 40 , and whom most likely are induced by the “Facebook movie” – believe all they read and hear.
Yet it was not long ago that Facebook was a minor player. It was a roster of people on the internet. Facebook rules were very strict. In essence they summarized – this is a roster, you are allowed one ( 1) account only. If we find you have more than one Facebook account you will be “banned for life” and worse.
Yet somehow facebook evolved into a community and advertising sales platform. At that point in time , several years ago – sure Facebook ads were cheap – especially compared to Google Adwords ads – yet they were laughable in terms of being horribly non-specific about targeting keywords and providing relevant results.
For example a user on Facebook might type in Viagra and the search engine ad system would deliver ads regarding Mexican vacations and holidays in Puerto Morelis Mexico or perhaps dealing with the cost of dental crowns and cosmetic surgery in Cancun.
Yet Facebook has grown to the point where Facebook estimates are more than 800 million users in total. Contrast that to the estimated population of 300 million in the USA & 100 million Mexican citizens.
Still these numbers must be put in context. Just like kids sign up for free yahoo and hotmail email accounts and forget them there are many dormant and duplicate Facebook users accounts.
Its anyone’s guess what the real Facebook members count really is.
Its a shame. One of the most useful tools for Search Engine Optimization types was the Yahoo site explorer. And now its gone.
Its the old story of what you have you take for granted – that is until its gone.
Google may of been the search engine that counted for most business types – yet Google severely limits the information that they provided to the users and games . That is what links were caught by the search engines , and perhaps what tactics and procedures worked or no longer worked.
The Yahoo tool was a most useful guidepost of figuring out in a gross sense what search engines “caught” or did not catch. On top of that many of the tools that were purchased and taken for granted in a days work – used the Yahoo site explorer as their basis and stock of trade.
Overall now that the service is gone – many users are perplexed . What counts ? What doesn’t ? What is effective and what is not. On top of that many of the tools – that now cost- don’t seem to work for all and catch all links. So it becomes a matter of using a number of tools in concert and working it out with judgment between it all.
Still its good as it keeps the nubes and neophytes out of the marketplace.
Slip sliding away. The world of search engines and search engine marketing travels along.
The latest updates deal with “local search” . Add in thumbnails to this of the website. More bandwidth hogs when it comes to loading times. Hello Google. Did not you ( 0r Mr. Matt Cutts) make some ground breaking announcement of the creator several months ago that website loading times would become a criteria ( if not a major criteria of Google’s search engine reward calculation and awards of positioning ? Hate to inform you that many computer users are on gasp ! dialup internet connections or high speed broadband “lite” or even mobile phones with downstream rates of in practical terms internet speed rates not much better than dialup at all. Add spyware to the mix , draining precious internet bandwidth and its one giant pull down or plug.
Is it malicious or is a ploy by Google to prove “who is boss” or a response to competitive pressures. Most likely the answer is all of the above and yet none of the above.
Google has grown and matured that like Microsoft that they are big companies , with huge multilevel departments. Its most likely a case of the left hand not knowing what the right is or is not doing and little else.

It is downright amazing to see all the twists and turns in the world of SEO and Search Engine Marketing
It can be said that if one search engine provided all the results ( that is proper results) to all queries , then there would be no need for other products. Google edged out , or pushed out , the market monolith Yahoo in that manner. It was not a matter of a large competitor with a huge marketing budget ( read MSN/Bing)
It was a better product spread by word of mouth.
To that point Google never forgot this lesson.
Not long ago ( months) Google was seen as the force – the market monolith taking over the world
Facebook was seen in a small light , added in with highly un-targeted ads
After all isn’t Google there not so much for searches by internet users , but rather as a platform to display ads. That is where the money is so to speak.
Yet facebook has no come out of nowhere to be the place where users spend hours and hours each day.
People go to Google to “look up things” , rather technical and are then presented with ads. Wheras on facebook people go to socialize. Socialization and telling of stories go all the way back to Ali Baba and the fourty thieves.
So in the end human nature reigns supreme. People go to facebook each day for hours and hours each day. While they are there online they happen just to be served up ads.
Who would of thought. Yet the more things change the more they remain the same.

One of the major factors in SEO and the weight that Google Yahoo and the other search engines give goes by historical record and even age of domain. Historically related websites that have a history seem to carry a lot of weight. This includes even has beens . Imagine Unisys – the power of 2 of what could be a reverse example carrying a lot of link weight.
In this manner a major site that carried link weight to Google was “Netscape” which had a sort of Digg like Web 2.0 role and was a player.
One day a couple of years ago – not that long – the service was rehashed and reorganized as “Propeller’ . What was interesting from an SEO perspective was that even though at that time Page rank was everything and carved in stone and the new service was on a different directory ( or sort of ) it did not take long at all for Google to reassign previous power rankings to the new service Propeller
Basically the site remained somewhat similar with a new name. Now comes a notice sign on the Propellor main page .
“As of October 1 , 2010 Propellor will no longer be active “……. loyal member of the site……
Well its a wait and see game now to see the next incarnation of this service.

There is a famous answer by George Rumsfeld the Defene Minister under George W Bush the younger
When asked information – Mr. Rumsfeld answered in an almost riddle – there are those things that you tell…. and there are those things that are secret
The answer was so good humorous and even short in answering the basic questions that we all ponder – what do you tell , how much and to whom that the answer was made into an operatic song.
In the same way Google and specifically Google’s CEO as to Google’s algorithm. Google’s nuts and bolts behind the scenes is their proprietary technology that keeps them ahead of the curve and their competition. It must be noted that even though Google to say the least has prospered , yet has not become too big to forget their lesson . Google knocked over in the marketplace the dominant monolith of the time – Yahoo as the search engine of choice.
On top of that Google fully appreciates that just like a big box store that exists to sell not product on its shelves but extended warranties.
In the same way Google attracts its clients – not to conduct internet searches for results but rather for its lucrative Google Adsense & Adwords PPC ads & ad programs
For the record here is Mr. Schmid’ts comments on the matter:
Danny Sullivan has posted a few videos from Google’s Zeitgeist event, and one of them is a fairly entertaining banter between Sullivan and Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Sullivan asks why Google doesn’t list its 200 ranking factors. Schmidt’s response:
“Because we change them. What would happen is, you’ve asked me this question for the eight years I’ve worked with you, so it’s the same question. Why don’t we publish these things. And the fundamental answer is we’re always changing. We’re always changing, and if we started saying here’s how the black box works, then all of a sudden huge incumbencies would come out about this change and that change, and we just don’t want that pressure.”
Take a group of SEO people involved in a discussion either at your local coffee shop or online via chat and email , and the most overly discussed topic , full of misunderstandings and misconceptions - involving long discussions and even arguments – leading nowhere and to no avail is ” Is there a Google sandbox”
Of course there is – it all depends what your terms are. The basis of Google’s or any search engine is discrimination of results. The whole basis of any search engine are the search engine results – that of course is why the user is there at the search engine themselves. It might be argued that in 2010 the role of search engines – especially Google is bring people ( users / bodies / consumers) to the specific search engine in order to display lucrative Google Adwords to them.
Then again that is like saying the purpose of a big box store is not to sell product ( which may have a low profit margin) , but rather lucrative and profitable extended warranties.
Search engines are all about filters and filtering of data. So why would one more filter – in this case an age filter be surprising in any manner or form ?
So if Google does have an age related filter what is the big deal ? On top of that it is a double edged sword for SEO types. It means first of all you can charge more for your services.
After all quality and age duration / aging of sites counts and is worth something. This keeps out novice and newly produced sites out of the race position number one. Secondly it gives webmasters some time to work and “tweak “ their websites – this can considered to be a luxury.
Get if up fast , get it up quick and cheap – the lament most graphic artists – is not in parallel with 100 % results. There is some time to work with , test and adjust the site for effect – that is if you have a marketers or business perspective not simply an artist who simply wants a pretty picture ( which is the main concern of most graphic artists , business for the most part is of little interest and indeed bores them)
So goes life and the world of Search Engine Optimization.

There is no or little doubt about it that TV – Television is a terrible medium
Its one way , no interaction and in most cases its just pablum for the masses to have them watch ads. Ads and advertisers after all are what pay for the networks and the “entertainment”.
Yet the overall quality of programming has just plummeted . It used to be that there were 3 networks / channels in a given area and even when tv was in its infancy with only 1 channel live in an area- there was something to watch.
Not in 2010 . Its a case of television and ad execs following a formula - this ratio or count is of point ought 1 (.01 %). Of course its a matter of numbers. Yet not long ago one could predict the demise of the tv ratings and even networks. It was hard times predicted for upcoming tv / entertainment industry execs. After all look at the recording industry sales numbers.
Kids have much more options now. With the internet and computers now – on msn , skype or facebook they might meet a new girlfriend / boyfriend whereas watching TV one could guarantee 100 % that that could never ever happen . 100 % guarantee. Add to the mix the popularity and growth of social networks.
Yet don’t count out the inertia of Television and the fact that some people “have no lives”. TV not only serves as their community but their whole life and its outlook.
Note the following 2 pages. They are the carefully and detailed laid out schedule of a person who mounts and plans their whole life – day in day out , week in week out , hour per hour planning and checking off the watching of Television reality shows. “Some Reality”

Nothing in life – politics or the internet is new so to speak
On top of that most wars and hostilities long after the battle and emotions have ended usually involves riches to be had – usually if not always in the form of minerals such as gold , diamonds and gemstones , black gold – oil or uranium
In this case the riches involves the internet and access to the black gold of advertising revenues
It used to be that people and potential customers had to physically ravel to your place of business – in the restaurant business the three most important factors to the success of any business were three things “location , location and location”
With the internet and virtual business its not physical location but rather virtual location and rankings
Google had been able to play coy and out of the debate of net neutrality – that is that the internet is free and democratic and that “everyone ‘ deserves the same treatment in rankings and prevalence on the internet and world wide web
A troubling development in this debate and battle has been Google ( with all its power) acquiescing to the broadband industry in a joint workup proposal to the Federal Communications Commision FCC in the US that somehow broadband wireless networks will have different terms and rules applied to these internet networks than the standard wired networks
Indeed in the FCC Google-Verison joint proposal seven key components are detailed. Chief among these is that somehow wireless broadband providers would not have to abide by policies and regulations mandated to “net neutrality”
The interesting point is that America’s internet practices and infrastructure rules and guides the industry and whole world. Sure though America ( and even Al Gore) invented the internet. America may be behind when it comes to broadband market penetration to such market leaders such as South Korea and Canada. Yet look at hosting of sites ( web hosting) as per ip. The highest majority ( and even foreign hosts such as Indian) mainly seem to be in the US. Not even in such industrialzied areas such as Europe and the UK.
Some of this may be communications availability , lack of hampering rules and inexpensive power costs
Woe behold us if Mr. Obama has his way with “cap and trade”

To most computer users and internet browsing types – most of unfamiliar if not aware of the even greater powers that avail themselves to their servants – Google , Yahoo and a host of other specialized search engines
One size does not fit all- if there was one search engine that pleased all there would be no alternative products
Yet there are
Even though Google may appear to be so intuitive and be able to work with sentences “How do I …. Asus ….laptop ….Ibm” or “What is the best restaurant in Edmonton for Pizza”
most internet types do not realize that in the end the basis of all – and of their searches is “Boolian Logic”
Utilize Boolean logic for more powerful as well as more precise searches
