Many people who read of the internet, want to make a killing on the internet and retire at 40 , and whom most likely are induced by the “Facebook movie” – believe all they read and hear.

Yet it was not long ago that Facebook was a minor player. It was a roster of people on the internet. Facebook rules were very strict. In essence they summarized – this is a roster, you are allowed one ( 1) account only. If we find you have more than one Facebook account you will be “banned for life” and worse.

Yet somehow facebook evolved into a community and advertising sales platform. At that point in time , several years ago – sure Facebook ads were cheap – especially compared to Google Adwords ads – yet they were laughable in terms of being horribly non-specific about targeting keywords and providing relevant results.
For example a user on Facebook might type in Viagra and the search engine ad system would deliver ads regarding Mexican vacations and holidays in Puerto Morelis Mexico or perhaps dealing with the cost of dental crowns and cosmetic surgery in Cancun.

Yet Facebook has grown to the point where Facebook estimates are more than 800 million users in total. Contrast that to the estimated population of 300 million in the USA & 100 million Mexican citizens.

Still these numbers must be put in context. Just like kids sign up for free yahoo and hotmail email accounts and forget them there are many dormant and duplicate Facebook users accounts.
Its anyone’s guess what the real Facebook members count really is.

Its Amazing

27 November 2010

It is downright amazing to see all the twists and turns in the world of SEO and Search Engine Marketing

It can be said that if one search engine provided all the results ( that is proper results) to all queries , then there would be no need for other products.  Google edged out , or pushed out , the market monolith Yahoo in that manner.   It was not a matter of a large competitor with a huge marketing budget ( read MSN/Bing)

It was a better product spread by word of mouth.

To that point Google never forgot this lesson.

Not long ago ( months) Google was seen as the force – the market monolith taking over the world

Facebook was seen in a small light , added in with highly un-targeted ads

After all isn’t Google there not so much for searches by internet users , but rather as a platform to display ads.  That is where the money is so to speak.

Yet facebook has no come out of nowhere to be the place where users spend hours and hours each day.

People go to Google to “look up things” , rather technical and are then presented with ads.  Wheras on facebook people go to socialize.  Socialization and telling of stories go all the way back to Ali Baba and the fourty thieves.

So in the end human nature reigns supreme.  People go to facebook each day for hours and hours each day. While they are there online they happen just to be served up ads.

Who would of thought.  Yet the more things change the more they remain the same.

Still they are not browsing at Google.

An interesting question in this day and age.  Where do you hunt for run away kids or kids on the street ?
It used to be that you asked their friends , or their school friends.  Or with die hard cases “On the street”

It used to be that neighborhood or school friends were key.  Then kids retreated into the world of tv or movies .

Now their friends are on the internet , and even better in social networking sites.   At the worst the need may be simply to communicate with local friends.  If the kid has no money or cell phone available check out means of internet and free internet – say the local  internet cafes.   Secondly check out places where free internet is afforded and available

First that comes to mind are libraries.   Second employment and job posting sites.  Also try bus depots and the like

The run away may  be simply posting and reading emails.  They may be a known commodity around a site – cadging unused internet time.

Next check the individual’s social networking pages - facebook and the like f for clues and posted information

Its a wide out wide out world out there

Twitter Rumblings

25 April 2009

From the New York Times :  What People do not like about the current fad “Twitter”

While it can be said by many established and respected online and web marketers somewhere along the lines of “If you are not using Twitter … You soon will be”   and the use of Twitter as an instant resource within their chosen fields as a resource of easy , quick accurate answers  to their questions and queries even more than previous sources of information and pointing to relevant information as the search engines Google and Yahoo there are certainly detractors from Twitter and it ilk as well.

In a recent collumn in the technology area of the New York Times it was pointed out that:

“My big issue with Twitter is not how much it is dominated by trivia, but simply the user interface. I think it is too hard to find and read what is interesting. The biggest flaws: “

  1. Short URLS. So much of Twitter is people sending links around they like. But when a tweet says “Great idea!” followed by some inscrutable URL, you simply have to gamble about whether you will click or not.
  2. Cryptic conversations in progress. You’ll often see someone responding to a tweet by someone that person follows but you don’t. Here is one that came across today “@ebayinkblog – Bob probably does too icon wink Twitter Rumblings ” Yes I could go click around and figure out what Bob was probably doing (and who Bob is), but that’s too much work for a four-word idea.
  3. Nonstandard mobile interface. All week, my mobile phone has been getting text messages, by way of Twitter, about fires in Los Angeles. I don’t want tweets by text, and I wanted to turn this off. Not knowing how, I sent a tweet of a single question mark, by convention a request for help in text interfaces. Instead, Twitter saw this as the ultimate short expression and tweeted “?” in my name. This set off a rather amusing discussion among some of my underemployed friends on Facebook (to which my tweets are automatically sent). But it didn’t solve my problem.
  4. People who use Twitter as e-mail. There is a subset of Twitter users, perhaps a disproportionate number of people I come across as a tech blogger, who now live in Twitter and assume everyone else does, too. So they send you personal messages on Twitter, thinking you will get them right away. We need to make the social norms clear: Twitter is where you talk about the consistency of your oatmeal. E-mail is for when you are running late for a meeting.

So be it .  Its your choice and use of time and personal resources.  There are only so many hours and keystrokes in a day.

That’s the word from Nielsen, which reports that the worldwide “reach” of sites like Facebook and MySpace has now outgrown that of the most popular e-mail services.According to the Nielsen Company’s new report, nearly 67 percent of global Internet users last year went online to use a social networking service of some kind, compared to just 65.1 percent for e-mail. (In case you’re wondering, search is still king with a global Net “reach” of 85.9 percent, followed by “general interest portals” with 85.2 percent, according to Nielsen.)

Another finding: When you consider global Internet use, about one in every 15 minutes was spent browsing social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace in 2008, the report claims—and apparently, that number is going nowhere but up.

Oh, and in case you hadn’t noticed, social networking isn’t just for kids anymore (as those of us who’ve been inundated with friend requests from long-lost high school buddies can attest). The Nielsen study analyzed “member community” growth among age groups in 2008, and it turns out that more 35-49 year-olds took up social networking last year than anyone else (about 24 million additional unique visitors over 2007), followed closely by 18-34 year-olds and 50-64 year-olds (13.6 million new unique visitors).

In terms of the social networking horse race, Nielsen gives the crown to Facebook with 108.3 million unique visitors in 2008, followed by MySpace with 81 million and Classmates Online with 19.7 million.

Overall, I’m not surprised. In the last year or so, I’ve noticed that more of my pals are ignoring their old e-mail accounts and using Facebook to send messages—and in practical terms, it’s easier to message friends over Facebook or MySpace accounts than to dig up their latest e-mail addresses.

And as far as seniors getting the social networking bug, well … I knew that was happening the moment my parents asked my about Facebook.

So, do you spend more time browsing Facebook and MySpace than checking your e-mail account? Care to tell us your age? And which service are you using?
