End of Yahoo Site Explorer

12 January 2012

Its a shame. One of the most useful tools for Search Engine Optimization types was the Yahoo site explorer. And now its gone.
Its the old story of what you have you take for granted – that is until its gone.

Google may of been the search engine that counted for most business types – yet Google severely limits the information that they provided to the users and games . That is what links were caught by the search engines , and perhaps what tactics and procedures worked or no longer worked.

The Yahoo tool was a most useful guidepost of figuring out in a gross sense what search engines “caught” or did not catch. On top of that many of the tools that were purchased and taken for granted in a days work – used the Yahoo site explorer as their basis and stock of trade.

Overall now that the service is gone – many users are perplexed . What counts ? What doesn’t ? What is effective and what is not. On top of that many of the tools – that now cost- don’t seem to work for all and catch all links. So it becomes a matter of using a number of tools in concert and working it out with judgment between it all.

Still its good as it keeps the nubes and neophytes out of the marketplace.

Yet how does Google and Gmail determine how to choose select and delivery these targeted ads to its Gmail account holders and users?

Its all advanced SEO to a great degree in practice.   Try it , notice the ads in your Gmail account right ( default settings) panel.  Gmail first of all in its system scans email of users for key words and content.  This was a rather a shock to the internet community when first revealed.  Yet it is much more sophisticated advanced than that in process and nature.

The Google Gmail system detects which emails and their associated key words and themes are used most often , which sets are saved to the greatest degree – both in time on the system , times used , which ones are seriously archived and which ones are deleted.

The Gmail system automatically deletes “trash”  and email deleted to the trash – so to a good degree those words , phrases and their ratios are enhanced and magnified for the system in the choices and choices of  targeted ads and timing of delivery.

Secondly another factor in the calculations of the awarding system seems to be mail composed and “sent”.  Sending and composing mail is an active , rather than passive , choice and series of choices by the Gmail client and potential consumer.

Its all in the algorithm and changing nature of the algorithms so to speak.

What is important to note for the practitioner of Search Engine Optimization SEO tactics and procedures is the nature of the tools used , their employ and levels of sophistication

If these tools are not being used in SERP Search Engine chosen Results in keyword searches and phrase resulting delivery and ranking they soon will be .  Be forewarned.

All in all it can be said in life , and Google’s awarding of limitless amounts of email storage space on Gmail that there is “No such thing as a free lunch”. “Nothing is for nothing”.

On with a discussion of Google & Gmails apparent largess when it comes to more than generous allocations and rules concerning email storage space in its Gmail email product.

Google itself is employing sophisticated SEO Search Engine Optimization techniques in practices in the choice and delivery of targeted Adwords ads to its registered Gmail users via their stored email. On top of that the system utilized by Google in this practice is anything but rudimentary.  Indeed this is of great use and demonstrates to the participants and practitioners of SEO , to some degree and to the least the extent of Google’s tools and level of powers and sophistication.  Be forewarned.

The adwords type ads which appear some of the time on the right hand panel of the Gmail email windows change from time  to time , and are anything but generic ads plastered in sequence.

First of all these ads may not even be noticed.  Like background music in a movie they tend to blend in.   Yet when a word or phrase is specifically targeted to a Gmail account user or users – their interest or subconscious mind may be peaked to action.  Alternatively it is no secret in the advertising business and in the psychology of the effect of ads that some of the time its not a direct message but continued and continual repetition again and again – that influences customers and consumers in buying choices and apparent brand loyalties and brand loyalty choice and cultivation.

For those of us with gmail email accounts.  One finds that Having a gmail account is almost essential today – if one wants the raft of Google services to assess – whether its moderated Google news alerts , Google Analystics, Google Webmaster tools etc etc etc.

Yet Google is more than liberal and generous when it comes to space allocated to Gmail.  True they have set the standard – forced other email providers to up the ante.  Gmail came onto the scene when hotmail offered a measly 4 mb of email space and Yahoo 6mb.

Gmail offered initially a gig and now not only that its unlimited – limited of course by one broadband upload capabilities.

Yet Google was smart and thorough in their allocation.  Try saving a program in gmail as storeage and you will be restricted and denied in the process – wheras Yahoo seems to allow this facility.

Yet why is Google so forthcoming.  Indeed though one can say that server space ” is cheap”, Google goes out its way to remind users not to be afraid , indeed to use more and more email storage space.   Indeed go to delete an email and you will be issued a friendly reminder by king Google – as to why not store the email as you have unlimited  email storage capabilities.   Yet its not like a bartender offering a workman a free drink at their establishment come pay day – or indeed several free drinks .

Most Interesting indeed.  Why the largess on the part of Google & Gmail.

At the present time Google is the search engine market juggernaut.   On top of that it is not the internet and e- commerce is an established marketplace.  High tech continues to grow at one of the fastest paces around.  It is not only in the industrialized first first.  Just like phone growth , from cell phones ,  grows at an astonishing rate in the third world so does the internet and internet use.  In dealing with phones – what used to be a long process of individually stringing wires and then manually allocating lines ( often with bribery and greased palms along the way) can be accomplished with thousands of lines with one cell tower erection and brand new switching equipment – equipment that is not slated to replace established hardware in the systems of the “more wealthy”   and “modern “  countries.  Its all too easy.

Yet Google can be said to be a “one thousand Gorilla”.  There is really no one to talk to or an appeal process if you run on the “wrong side of the law”  , when it comes to SEO.  Good luck.

So it pays , as in dealing with the law and lawyers , to stay on the good side.

What are Googl’e's thoughts and views on SEO Search Engine Optimization itself ?  While this may be the “company line”  or the stated Google line as opposed to the views of one agent who may just “throw the switch” it provides both a useful starting point and reference:

SEO is an acronym for “search engine optimization” or “search engine optimizer.” Deciding to hire an SEO is a big decision that can potentially improve your site and save time, but you can also risk damage to your site and reputation. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. Many SEOs and other agencies and consultants provide useful services for website owners, including:

  • Review of your site content or structure
  • Technical advice on website development: for example, hosting, redirects, error pages, use of JavaScript
  • Content development
  • Management of online business development campaigns
  • Keyword research
  • SEO training
  • Expertise in specific markets and geographies.

Keep in mind that the Google search results page includes organic search results and often paid advertisement (denoted by the heading “Sponsored Links”) as well. Advertising with Google won’t have any effect on your site’s presence in our search results. Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results, and it costs nothing to appear in our organic search results. Free resources such as Webmaster Tools, the official Webmaster Central blog, and our discussion forum can provide you with a great deal of information about how to optimize your site for organic search. Many of these free sources, as well as information on paid search, can be found on Google Webmaster Central.

Before beginning your search for an SEO, it’s a great idea to become an educated consumer and get familiar with how search engines work. We recommend starting here:

If you’re thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A great time to hire is when you’re considering a site redesign, or planning to launch a new site. That way, you and your SEO can ensure that your site is designed to be search engine-friendly from the bottom up. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site.

Some useful questions to ask an SEO include:

  • Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?
  • Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?
  • Do you offer any online marketing services or advice to complement your organic search business?
  • What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?
  • What’s your experience in my industry?
  • What’s your experience in my country/city?
  • What’s your experience developing international sites?
  • What are your most important SEO techniques?
  • How long have you been in business?
  • How can I expect to communicate with you? Will you share with me all the changes you make to my site, and provide detailed information about your recommendations and the reasoning behind them?

While SEOs can provide clients with valuable services, some unethical SEOs have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to manipulate search engine results in unfair ways. Practices that violate our guidelines may result in a negative adjustment of your site’s presence in Google, or even the removal of your site from our index. Here are some things to consider:

  • Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue.Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:

    “Dear google.com,

I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories…”

Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for “burn fat at night” diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.

  • No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.
  • Be careful if a company is secretive or won’t clearly explain what they intend to do.Ask for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or “throwaway” domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google’s index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire, so it’s best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to “help” you.
  • You should never have to link to an SEO.Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of “free-for-all” links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that don’t affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines — at least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.
  • Choose wisely. While you consider whether to go with an SEO, you may want to do some research on the industry. Google is one way to do that, of course. You might also seek out a few of the cautionary tales that have appeared in the press, including this article on one particularly aggressive SEO: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002002970_nwbizbriefs12.html. While Google doesn’t comment on specific companies, we’ve encountered firms calling themselves SEOs who follow practices that are clearly beyond the pale of accepted business behavior. Be careful.
  • Be sure to understand where the money goes. While Google never sells better ranking in our search results, several other search engines combine pay-per-click or pay-for-inclusion results with their regular web search results. Some SEOs will promise to rank you highly in search engines, but place you in the advertising section rather than in the search results. A few SEOs will even change their bid prices in real time to create the illusion that they “control” other search engines and can place themselves in the slot of their choice. This scam doesn’t work with Google because our advertising is clearly labeled and separated from our search results, but be sure to ask any SEO you’re considering which fees go toward permanent inclusion and which apply toward temporary advertising.
  • What are the most common abuses a website owner is likely to encounter?
  • One common scam is the creation of “shadow” domains that funnel users to a site by using deceptive redirects. These shadow domains often will be owned by the SEO who claims to be working on a client’s behalf. However, if the relationship sours, the SEO may point the domain to a different site, or even to a competitor’s domain. If that happens, the client has paid to develop a competing site owned entirely by the SEO.

Another illicit practice is to place “doorway” pages loaded with keywords on the client’s site somewhere. The SEO promises this will make the page more relevant for more queries. This is inherently false since individual pages are rarely relevant for a wide range of keywords. More insidious, however, is that these doorway pages often contain hidden links to the SEO’s other clients as well. Such doorway pages drain away the link popularity of a site and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content.

  • What are some other things to look out for?
    • owns shadow domains
    • puts links to their other clients on doorway pages
    • offers to sell keywords in the address bar
    • doesn’t distinguish between actual search results and ads that appear on search results pages
    • guarantees ranking, but only on obscure, long keyword phrases you would get anyway
    • operates with multiple aliases or falsified WHOIS info
    • gets traffic from “fake” search engines, spyware, or scumware
    • has had domains removed from Google’s index or is not itself listed in Google
    • requests your FTP account information or root access to your server
  • There are a few warning signs that you may be dealing with a rogue SEO. It’s far from a comprehensive list, so if you have any doubts, you should trust your instincts. By all means, feel free to walk away if the SEO:

Trial , Error and Test

1 March 2008

In summary it can be said of SEO that Search Engine Optimization is a skill set and technique of reverse engineering.

The workings of the search algorithms be they primarily Google , Yahoo or MSN ( the greatest bulk of search engine traffic) , are kept close to the chest.  The amount of money being made in Google adsense or the various pay to click targeted advertising campaigns are very large – indeed staggering amounts of money.  Hence the actual rules and workings of these search engines and how they judge sites and assign rankings are top top secrets.

Hence SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) can be said to overall one of following the market and results of successful sites .  What works , why am i ranking , or why am i not – what is the other site doing , or not doing that results in rankings.

Once determined its a game of  educated trial and follow through of test. Does it work ?   The time frames are not instant.  They can be quick or in the case of Google it can take almost forever until the Google “cache” clears or refreshes.  If successful great , if not try again.

One major point to emphasize.  The search engines and their rules are changing all the time.  What was last years greatest find of a technique may of been discovered by Google or one the search engine you are after for better rankings and just not work at all , or have very little effect in the serp (Search engine results)  rankings this year.  Its a matter of trial , error , testing and flexibility in all.
