Spam Spam Spam

20 February 2010

It is oft quoted that one man’s “freedom fighter”  is another man’s “terrorist”.  The same statement can be held to be somewhat relevant when it comes to spam – or junk email.  email is still one of the most effective means of sales in 2010 yet.  Especially if one has a list – gleaned from previous sales or traded with contacts.

The means of marketing for or with lists goes as far back in recent advertising as Sears Roebuck and the famed Sear’s Catalog.  Sell a consumer a product — even at a loss , yet obtain his or her name as a future customer and you have a target to throw mud against the wall.  Its not John Candy , explaining on a SCTV skit as to why he and his “partner”  had remade the famed film classic “Midnight Cowboy” as a 3d movie  – “Well Maam its like this – we thought about it and…. if only a small percentage … 1/10 of a 1/10 of a percent of the people who went to see the original famous Midnight Cowboy movie went to see our film then we would be on the “Gravy Train”.

Yet these concepts of working with a list often meet limited results in the hands of the inexperienced and rank amateurs.  For example one Bridges long hair seminars , involved in the marketing of  long hair seminars, this fellow and  character had it all worked out.  He would offer a favor or prize online at his site – an ebook of a hard cover book , that had been promoted and touted by Oprah herself.  The hard cover book cost  $ 55 at Barnes and Nobles or Chapters worked out this rank novice.  The book was “hot hot hot”.  He could purchase and ebook version online on ebay.  Then over the book on an autoresponder for free, collect the names .   These names would thus form the basis of his targeted marketing list – his gold mine , who would certainly purchase more product . to earn the Bridges character big money.

Welcome to life and reality in 2010.   First of all – if the book was that hot – then it would of been available online for free , or at little cost and risk from many other sources – not the least would be file sharing and torrents.  Next add in duplicate and decoy email addresses – all free or little charge – thus diluting the real effect and power of the list.  Lastly add in spam filters so that the messages or sales messages in many if not most cases would never reach the potential purchaser and buyer what so ever.  Welcome to life – if the idea is good its most likely been thought of and worked with before.  However in these marketing times , the time frames are very quick and rapid and you have to be at the leading edge of the curve.

In buying or check text links one point to check for is for “no-follow “tags.   No follow tags were a strategy and tactic worked with by the major search engines in unison and industry wide coordination in order to work against plague of “Blog comment spam”.

Basically what occurred that seo black hat spammers would utilize programs to leave comments on blogs in order to obtain a valid link back from blogs?  It is one thing for a person to leave a valid comment or comments – in some length adding value to both the Blog and its readers commenting on a given topic or post or other comments.

It is quite another situation when a Blog webmaster awakes and finds 1000 or 1500 comments all similar  such as “I like your Blog “ ,  “good post”  or “very valuable indeed”.  These are generic posts of no value, or a rehash or rewrite of a Blog post – only done to create a link back, not to add anything of value to the Blog or its readership.

What no follow tags do is allow the item to be noticed by the search engines , yet the search engines will not follow the link to its source , nor give it credit as incoming link to the site that is trying to link from site A.  Not to good for SEO benefits by any means.

How do you spot no follow tags – either on your site, or on sites that you are posting to and on?  Simply go to the edit > view tab.  View the html of the page.  Look for  the tag “rel=nofollow” to your links .  If you cannot spot the tag   then does a control-F find command?

It may be asked if the introduction of the no-follow format tactic has been accepted well and is effective in it purpose of stopping junk spam comments.   To some degree it has.  Yet it is still a numbers game.  Seo black spammers still run such programs postulating that if their programs pump away 24/7 and only a small percentage get through – then they will still be on a gravy train of simply effective incoming links for their websites that they are promoting with seo tactics and procedures.
